The Color Purple The color purple is a blend of red and blue with many shades within its family. On the color wheel, purple falls between violet and magenta. There are many shades in the purple family including light purples, lavender, deep eggplant purple and purples that fall closer to bright shades of magenta and fuchsia or indigo and violet. The Royalty of Purple Purple is historically associated with royalty which is primarily a result of how costly it once was to procure purple. Purple is organically found from the mucus of a shell fish known as a mollusk. It is estimated that it took over 8,000 of these sea creatures for just a single gram of dye. This made the excavation of the color hugely expensive and consequently something only royalty could afford. Today, the color is very popular and easily re-produced synthetically in a wide variety of shades and tones. It is considered to be more feminine than masculine. Natural Purples There are many purples found in natural settings, especially flowers. Orchids produce some of the most vibrant and unique purples. Some flowers present various shades of purple that are more familiar such as the purple-pink shades of heliotropes and the range of light purple to deep purple of pansies. There are also several varieties of fruits and vegetables that demonstrate various purple tones including plums, eggplant and small, dense apples typically used for making cider. | — Color coordinates —
